Cape Town based composer, arranger, and virtuoso guitarist; Derek Gripper is known for his ground-breaking technique evoking the West African kora on solo guitar. His work creates an unprecedented meeting point between written and oral traditions, re-writing the language of African and Classical Guitar.
When Gripper released “One Night on Earth,” his 2012 album of kora translations, classical guitar legend John Williams said he thought it was “absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it,” while kora maestro Toumani Diabaté asked for confirmation that it was indeed just one person playing. Both invited Derek to collaborate with them: Derek performed with Williams in London’s Shakespeare’s Globe and King’s Place, and with Diabaté and his Symmetric Orchestra at the Acoustik Festival Bamako, Mali. His 2016 Carnegie Hall debut paired him with Mali’s Trio da Kali, and the UK’s Songlines honoured him with best album in Africa and the Middle East for his 2016 album “Libraries on Fire.”
Since these two recordings put kora/guitar on the map, his recent recordings “A Year of Swimming” (2020), “Billy Goes to Durban,” (2021) and “Sleep Songs for My Daughter” (2022), have incorporated elements of his kora explorations in original compositions and improvisations, captured on tape in the field and in studio.
On-stage, Derek is both informative scholar and irreverent comedian, effortlessly shifting between conversation and music, reminding us that the art of the griot, even if only evoked by a non-griot, is the art of storytelling as much as it is the art of music-making.
At present Gripper is collaborating with Malian kora master Ballaké Sissoko on a new duo project and recording for the record label Platoon.

A must see for anyone who gravitates towards Sting or Norah Jones and who would like a calmer moment at the Journey to Jazz festival, Karien De Waal is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and educator from Cape Town. After having completed her studies in contemporary writing at Berklee College of Music in the USA, Karien returned to Cape Town and found her calling by helping young South Africans get opportunities in music too.
In 2018, she founded ‘Join Bands Not Gangs’ – a non-profit aimed at helping young people from marginalized and previously disadvantaged communities get into music programmes instead of gangsterism or drugs, which they start with donated instruments and teacher stipends.
To date, ‘Join Bands Not Gangs’ has helped start or strengthen over 26 music programmes across the Western Province with donated musical instruments, sent 12 gangsters to rehab and currently runs a successful post-rehab program for reformed gangsters. The organization has also produced over 14 songs and music videos and has been featured on Al Jazeera, SABC3 News and Expresso Breakfast Show. The organization has been sponsored by SONY Music to create a song “Wake Up Africa!”, with video and documentary, telling the story of how music impacts South African youth at a grassroots level. In her personal capacity, Karien has been Artist in Residence for the “Inspired by Berklee” series, which saw her teach all over South Africa in 2021. Most recently, she wrote an co-produced the theme song for “Celebrate Christmas in Singapore 2022” – the national Christmas concert of Singapore. (https://youtu.be/UjurYun83GE)
After a long season of working behind the scenes and in a supporting/writing/producing role, Karien is stepping out to perform as an artist in her own right. Her sound can be described as folk-inspired, with a bit of contemporary classical and South African – all the styles she loves. Karien will be performing on guitar accompanied by violin and cello. Her lyrics are poems and prayers, like modern day hymns, delicate and honest.
