JOURNEY TO JAZZ...

Journey to Jazz is an annual Karoo festival drawing inspiration from the history, art and natural environment of the Prince Albert desert. This intimate and bespoke experience offers a week of music, masterclasses, food and nature all at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A full programme of local and international artists perform throughout the town in restaurants, on farms and in churches. The locals of Prince Albert curate a community events programme which sees visitors camping under the stars, doing yoga at sunrise and walking the Wolvekraal conservancy.

Journey to Jazz is a showcase event of the Prince Albert Community Trust (PACT). It is a culmination of the Leadership Development work that takes place throughout the year with youth who are affiliated with the PACT community center in Prince Albert. Journey to Jazz is conceptualized and driven by PACT and a crew of more than 80 young people of the region. Through on-going training in hospitality, event management, media and life skills, local youth welcome visitors from around the country and globe to experience a true Karoo fees!

WHO IS PACT?

The Prince Albert Community Trust (PACT) is a nonprofit and public benefit organisation based in the municipal district of Prince Albert.

Our vision is to develop and empower confident and capable young people using education, creative arts and micro-enterprise – spanning from early childhood development (ECD) to the world of work. Journey to Jazz is one of our showcase events and provides an opportunity for youth to be trained and gain practical experience in all aspects of hosting a festival, including event management, sound and stage management, media and marketing, music production etc.

The festival also acts as a fundraiser for PACT to broaden its ambit and positive impact on the communities of Prince Albert, Leeu Gamka and Klaarstroom.

BUILDING LEADERS FOR THE FUTURE

INSTITUTIONAL ENDORSEMENT

I am delighted to endorse the Prince Albert Community Trust (PACT) for their dedication to the development of young people in the Karoo. PACT’s work on the ground is an exemplary example of the kind of insightful, vigorous, and consistent input our youth require to uplift themselves and change the course of history.

JOURNEY TO JAZZ PHILOSOPHY:
Something from Nothing, Outa Lappies

The late Jan Schoeman, AKA Outa Lappies, was a local philosopher-artist who inspired travellers from all over the globe. His central philosophy taught to him by his sheep-shearer father was this: “Every day, make something out of nothing.”

Outa Lappies exemplified this every day of his life and has inspired Prince Albert to do likewise. In 2000 he was voted Tourism Personality of the Year. This incredibly humble but impactful human passed on in 2011 but in honour of his lasting memory PACT has created LapLand sewing studio – a group of artisans who create merchandise using his philosophy, “something from nothing”. We hope you feel inspired by Outa Lappies when you visit us at the Journey to Jazz festival.
