The Prince Albert Gallery has a deep history of art, entertainment and connecting people through shared experience. Built in the Victorian era, the building boasts ornate detailing and craftsmanship in its pressed ceilings and a graceful balcony that wraps around a light-filled, double-volume interior. Once home to the town’s bioscope, it drew people together through the power of storytelling. That spirit remains ever present.

Today, the Prince Albert Gallery carries its essence of craftsmanship and connection forward. For over two decades it has been home to both international and local Karoo artists, thoughtfully curated by a dedicated gallery team. The gallery celebrates the broad richness of South African art alongside the raw, stoic character of Karoo art, a distinct genre in South African art defined by themes of silence, space, light and endurance. Within these walls, art connects people, provokes thought and offers revelation through a profound visual experience.

This spirit of shared connection will be very much alive during the Jazz Festival, as the Prince Albert Gallery presents “Stillness”, a photographic exhibition by Jonathon Rees. Jonathon captures the essence of jazz: a celebration of the musicians, the moments, and the magic that lives between the notes. He captures the discipline, the spontaneity, and the feeling of connection in milliseconds of stillness.

Experience “Stillness” with us — a dramatic millisecond of silence juxtaposed against the vibrant spontaneity of jazz. In black and white, Rees captures what the music itself can never hold: the pause, the breath, the moment of absolute stillness that lives between the notes. It is an invitation to see jazz not as you hear it, but as it feels.
