The Karoo Jazz Project

Paul Hanmer not only brings his trio and solo performances to Journey to Jazz. He is also a mentor for the Karoo Jazz Project (KJP) this year. This initiative brings together young musicians and experienced mentors to engage in collaborative learning, masterclasses, and rehearsals over a number intensive sessions ahead of the festival.  KJP’s vision is to strengthen jazz education and performance skills among musicians from this region.

In his words Paul is blown away by the songs he received to work with and respects the level of artistry by the young people. While their songs are short, he hopes to lengthen them and incorporate treatments of brass band a choir. He is enjoying working with the teams on the ground in the lead up period. He gave special mention to Waldon Paul the tutor at PACT centre who did a brilliant job with the compositions. Look out for a riveting group performance by the youth of the Karoo at Journey to Jazz.

The Journey to Jazz Karoo Jazz Project is a transformative initiative that will not only prepare musicians for the Karoo Jazz Festival but also foster a strong jazz community across the region. Through mentorship, collaboration, and live performances, we aim to inspire the next generation of jazz artists and music lovers.
