Zolani Youth Choir
Zolani Youth Choir – a voice of hope and harmony – hails from Ashton, Western Cape, rooted in the heart of the Zolani community. Founded in 2012, by Odwa Mvunge, the choir emerged in response to the lack of cultural activities in local schools and the broader community, providing young voices with an opportunity to develop musical skills, discipline, and a sense of purpose.
Comprised of 65 passionate singers, many of whom have no formal musical training, the choir has become a beacon of inspiration and artistic expression. More than just a musical ensemble, the Zolani Youth Choir instils values of dedication, teamwork, and discipline, proving that with heart and commitment, greatness can be achieved. Under the guidance of their conductor, members are encouraged to develop an understanding of group dynamics, responsibility, and respect, preparing them for challenges both within and beyond the choir.
To add to their impressive list of local and international awards, in 2024, they won a Grand Prix award on August 31, the highest prize in the prestigious A Cappella Moscow Music Competition/ Festival, Russia.
The choir aspires to become a recognised force in South African choral music, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Zolani and expanding its reach beyond regional borders. Zolani Youth Choir is not just about music—it is about empowerment, education, and community upliftment. Through their performances, they embody the belief that music is a universal language of hope and opportunity, helping young people discover their self-worth and potential.
